NMD by Adidas Originals : an encounter with Nic Galway, global design director

His work at Vogue Italia was also lauded, particularly with the "Black Issue" which exclusively featured Black models. That project sold out in 72 hours, prompting Condé Nast to print an additional run. Since taking over British Vogue, he is the fir…

Got the new NMD sneakers and took them for a stroll in the city.

(New York, USA. 01 / 2016)

Got to visit the Adidas435 Hudson Street headquarters in Manhattan, invited by the Adidas Originals team in Lima. The massive building welcomes a group of Latin American bloggers and journalists during one of the coldest day of January to share a moment with Nic Galway, Adidas Creative Global director. The occasion? The launch of the new NMD sneakers to the worldwide streetwear market.

We pass through dozens of modern glass-offices to get to the lounge where Galway is waiting patiently for us to arrive. He has a warm smile to his face but I can immediately tell he is exhausted from a whole day of interviews, but he kept the energy in high levels to talk about the ideas that led him to conceive the NMD model, which hit the stores on April 2016.

As a previous designer for the automobile industry, Nic Galway shared with us :

  • Follow your instinct. The designs he has enjoyed the most creating are the ones that came to him on a sudden rush of inspiration.

  • Always keep in mind who you are, where you come from and where you are going. But don’t get stuck in the past. Take your heritage and project it to the future.

  • Don’t be afraid to explore your own versatility. If a sneaker if the vehicle for that, so be it. If it is a song, a book, a film, a piece of clothing, that’s fine too. Don’t limit yourself.

Inspired by Galway’s words, I went out to explore the city on my next and last day in New York.

Started with a quick breakfast at Elephant & castle with a Syrian-American stylist friend based in New York and then headed to the West Village to grab a coffee with a Lucia cuba, a Peruvian academic and long time friend that works in Parsons The New School of Design. Shortly after that, I had a quick coffee and avocado toast (of course) with Juana Burga, a Peruvian model based in New York and a regular face in the fashion and film industry.

Barely made it back to my Soho hotel to jump into a yellow cab and head towards JFK for my flight to Lima. All of it, with my NMDs on and a lightness on every step. Shout out to New York and the Adidas team for making this experience and encounters possible.
